Is ultraviolet light dangerous?

UV Benefits and Risks

The issue of whether ultraviolet light (UV) is dangerous has been an ongoing topic of hot debate that continues today. Depending on which literature you look at, you can find support both for and against exposure to UV light. The simple, unavoidable truth is that we all are exposed to UV light on a daily basis the minute we take step one outside of our homes during the daytime. Overexposure to UVA and UVB light, whether from the sun or from indoor tanning bed bulbs, can and will cause damage to your skin in the form of sunburn and premature aging. It may also lead to skin cancer. However, in moderation, UVA and UVB light exposure can and do provide benefits. Included among those benefits are a reduction in symptoms of conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, psoriasis, and acne; an increase in the body's production of vitamin D, which plays a critical role in maintaining the wellness of more than 30 body tissues. The indoor tanning industry strives to educate salon owners on safe tanning practices to make sure the health and well-being of its customers is protected.
