April 17, 2009, Newsletter Issue #188: Tanning & Acne

Tip of the Week

Indoor tanning per se cannot cure acne, but a growing body of anecdotal evidence shows that light therapy, also known as phototherapy or heliotherapy, can help alleviate the symptoms of acne. However, acne medications such as Acutane are known photosensitizing agents. That means that if you are on it, your risk of burning while tanning--whether from a home tanning bed or tanning lamp or from sunlight--is increased significantly. Before you consider using indoor tanning as a therapeutic treatment for acne symptoms, check with your physician.
