February 15, 2008, Newsletter Issue #128: Food as Source of Vitamin D

Tip of the Week

There are many foods, including fish and eggs, that naturally contain vitamin D. Others are vitamin D fortified during processing. However, food alone cannot supply an adequate amount of vitamin D to a meet your body's needs. Still, eating foods that are vitamin D rich, either naturally or through fortification, can be part of an overall plan to ensure you do not become vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D supplements and multivitamins are other sources of vitamin D that can be ingested. No matter how well you eat, though, you'll still need to ensure that you receive an adequate amount of exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or a home or commercial tanning bed to maintain optimum health.
